Description
A summary of the perennial, transpersonal themes inherent in art and art therapy frame the core of this presentation. Begining with an autobiographical discussion of Michael Franklins connections to the studio arts and art as therapy, particularly empathic applications of Edith Kramer’s Third Hand. The talk then turns towards the intersections between art, meditation, and the socially engaged transpersonal art therapist.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify and categorize 3 core principles of Transpersonal Psychology.
- Participants will be able to identify 3 significant connections between art therapy and transpersonal psychology.
- Participants will be able to recognize and classify 3 connections between contemplative practice and the clinical practice of art therapy.
Presenter
Michael A. Franklin, PhD, ATR-BC
Michael is professor and past chair of the graduate Transpersonal Art Therapy program at Naropa University. Prior to this appointment, he practiced as a clinician and chaired the art therapy programs at the College of St. Teresa and Bowling Green State University. Michael is an international lecturer and workshop leader, publishing over 30 papers on numerous subjects including aesthetics, self-esteem, AIDs iconography, interpretive strategies, community-based art therapy, and arts-based research. His current work investigates the intersections between empathic attunement, social engagement, and the contemplative philosophies of yoga and meditation. He is the author of: Art as Contemplative Practice: Expressive Pathways to the Self with SUNY Press. (see ArtisYoga.com)
Juliet King, (ABD), ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC (moderator) is an Associate Professor in the Art Therapy Department at GWU and also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor of neurology, Indiana University School of Medicine
