Lisa Raye Garlock

Lisa Raye Garlock was raised in a military family and lived in Europe, Okinawa and various states while growing up. She continues to be interested in travel and learning about other cultures. Most recently, she taught art therapy in Croatia, at the University of Osijek. She has walked the 200-mile Coast to Coast and Pembrokeshire Coast paths in the UK, and has taken students to India for International Social and Cultural Diversity class. She works with an international non-profit, Common Threads Project, that trains therapists in using story cloths, along with art therapy, mind/body awareness and psychoeducation to help women recover from the trauma of gender-based violence. She has done Common Threads training in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and facilitated workshops in Geneva, Switzerland.

As an artist, Lisa works with a variety of media, including textiles, glass beads, jewelry, painting, and mixed media. She has a strong belief that as an art therapist, it is important for her to stay current with her own art, as it informs her work and life. She manages and curates the GW Art Therapy Gallery, where they exhibit two student art exhibits a year, plus an exhibit showcasing art therapists, art therapy themes, or juried shows for art therapists.

In her role as Clinical Placement Coordinator, Lisa helps students find internship placements, develops new sites, and organizes supervisor's workshops. She also teaches two courses each semester. She majored in Printmaking at the Rochester Institute of Technology, with minors in Textiles and Painting, and received her Master's of Science with Specialization in Art Therapy from Nazareth College of Rochester. She has worked with adults, adolescents and children in hospitals, schools, community-based organizations and shelters. She is a credentialed art therapy supervisor (ATCS) and a Licensed Clinical Professional Art Therapist (LCPAT).
