Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 key challenges in virtual art therapy approaches
- Name 3 outcomes when working in virtual art therapy with various client populations
- Clarify 3 considerations for future work at the interface of virtual art therapy and clinical health populations
Presenters:
Sara Prins-Hankinson, BFA, DVATI, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and Art History. Sara went on to study at the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute, where most of her work was done with women and children with cancer. Her thesis focused on the positive impact that art therapy has on oncology patients. In May 2010, Sara became the primary art therapist at the BC Cancer Agency. Her work includes coordinating the Children’s Group and an Art Therapy group for young adults with cancer.
Sheila Lorenzo de la Peña, PhD, ATR-BC, ATCS, has experience with a wide variety of populations, having worked in a forensic setting with individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness. She currently teaches undergraduate and graduate students as an assistant professor at PennWest Edinboro. Additionally, she supervises the campus studio and its online counterpart. She’s passionate about personal creative practices being in line with and informing our clinical identities.
Carolyn Brown Treadon (she/her), PhD, ATR-BC, ATCS is the Program Coordinator of the Graduate Art Therapy program at Pennsylvania Western (PennWest) University. Before teaching at PennWest, she taught at Florida State University and Thomas University. Carolyn has provided art therapy services in alternative schools and out-patient programs. She was the clinical supervisor of a community based mental health clinic.
Michelle Winkel is an art therapist, trained facilitator, and supervisor with thirty years of experience working directly with groups, families, and individuals. Michelle’s credentials include a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California and a Registered Art Therapist in North America as well as a Registered Canadian Art Therapist. From 2004 to 2005, she held a fellowship in Infant-Parent Mental Health from Harvard Children’s Hospital. Currently, she is the Clinical and Academic Director of CiiAT, a non profit organization that she co-founded. Michelle is the editor and co-author of Virtual Art Therapy: Research and Practice and is the author, with co-author Dr. Maxine Junge, of Graphic Facilitation and Art Therapy: Imagery and Metaphor in Organizational Development. Currently, she is on the editorial board for the Canadian Journal of Art Therapy: Research, Practice, and Issues.
