International Panel: Art therapy across the globe: Socio-cultural considerations for the treatment of Trauma

Description
The purpose of this panel is to illuminate art therapy perspectives, philosophies, and approaches to the treatment of trauma from different vantage points across the globe. Through a culturally specific lens, art therapists from Ghana, India, Israel, Lithuania, and South Africa will gather to discuss contemporary theories of intervention and how personal, subjective experiences inform a necessary and specialized approach. This panel is intended for art therapy, counseling, and social work graduate students and professionals who are interested in learning about the treatment of trauma through a broad socio-cultural context.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Participants will identify at least three cultural-specific trauma approaches
- Participants will explore how art materials and methods are specialized and applied in at least two different areas of the world
- Participants will understand and be able to name two barriers and facilitators to providing art therapy across the globe

Presenters:
Panelist representing Ghana
Jennifer Koney (Ms) is an Art Therapist and an Art Educator with a strong background in Educational psychology. She has been a part time art therapist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, in Kumasi Ghana since January 2018, till date. She holds an MPhil degree in Art Education, and she is due to graduate from her MSc Creative Art Therapy program in November, 2022. She studied extensively in art therapy during her MPhil program, and worked with trafficked children who had been rescued from their fish masters in Ghana at the time. Ms. Koney is part of three students who pioneered the Creative Art Therapy program in Ghana. She has a keen interest in art therapy research and she has a strong desire to help establish the profession in clinical practice in Ghana.
Panelists representing India
Susan Ainlay Anand, MA, ATR-BC, ATCS, LPAT, LMFT is a graduate of New York University and has worked with children and adults in inpatient and outpatient settings since 1982. She is on faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she provides clinical services and participates in resident training. She is an adjunct faculty member in the MFA in Art Therapy Program at MIT-ADT, School of Fine Arts in Pune, India. Susan facilitates groups for cancer patients (The Creative Healing Studio) and people with memory loss (Art in Mind) at the Mississippi Museum of Art. She has published accounts of her work in journals and books and authored and co-edited the book, The Legacy of Edith Kramer: A Multifaceted View (Routledge, 2018). Her interests include advocating for the profession through the MS Art Therapy Association and as a member of the Advisory Council for Licensed Professional Art Therapists through the Mississippi Department of Health which regulates the art therapy profession in her state. Nationally, she has served as a board member and treasurer for the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) and was a member of the Board of Directors for the American Art Therapy Association (AATA). Susan has worked on numerous committees in AATA and co-chairs the International Special Interest Group. She frequently volunteers for community projects that use art making for healing and wellness. She has conducted workshops and presentations in the U.S. and other countries.
Sangeeta Prasad, MA, ATR-BC, has over 30 years of experience working as an art therapist with children and adults and is currently in private practice. She is the co-founder of Circle Art Studio in Virginia, USA, and vice president of the Prasad Family Foundation. She has published two books, "Creative Expressions: Say it with Art" and "Using Art Therapy with Diverse Populations, Crossing Cultures, and Abilities." She founded the Indian Art Therapy Discussion Forum (IATDF) in 2015.
Currently, she is helping start an MFA in Art Therapy at the Maharastra Insititute of Technology (MIT) Pune, India. She also designed the introduction to art therapy course at the Women's Christian College (WCC), Chennai, India. She was a director of the American Art Therapy Association Board from 2016 to 2018. Sangeeta pursues her passion for art through painting using traditional Indian art techniques and hand-woven Indian fabrics. Her websites are www.sangeetaprasad.com and www.circleartstudio.com.
Panelist representing Israel
Einat Metzl, PHD, LMFT, ATR-BC, RPT-S is a licensed marital and family therapist (MFT) and a registered art therapist (ATR). She is a therapist in private practice and an associate professor at Bar Ilan University’s graduate Art Therapy program. Einat is committed to expanding art therapy research and bridging our current paradigms of art therapy with related discipline. Her previous work explored the interwoven and collective knowledge of wellness connected to art therapy, sex therapy, disaster mental health, resilience, play therapy, inter-generational trauma, leadership and diversity, couples' therapy, and coping with loss.
Panelist representing Lithuania
Aušra Sebeikaitė - lecturer at Lithuanian University of Helath Sciences and Vilnius Academy of Arts master's degree programme "Art Therapy", graduate of the programme and practitioner of art therapy. Member of the Committee of the Master's Degree Programme "Art Therapy" of LSMU and VDA and representative person of ECArTE (European Consortium of Arts Therapies Education) ; Head of the Art Therapy Society "TerapiArta".
Currently she works at the Crisis Intervention Centre and Day Center at the Psychiatric Clinic of Kaunas Hospital, LSMU; she regularly participates in conferences, updates and improves her knowledge in seminars, and prepares publications on art therapy. The target groups of A. Sebeikaitė's research and therapies are students, adults suffering from mental illnesses, and people experiencing psychological crises. She conducts both individual and group art therapy and has experience working with children, adolescents and the elderly with complex disabilities. As Aušra says: "Art, creation, fine arts is a powerful force to communicate with the client”.

University of Johannesburg
Amalia Beagle received her MA Fine Art with a specialization in arts-based methodologies as pedagogical practices. She has trained with Lefika La Phodiso as an Art therapy counsellor. She coordinates the BA Hons Art Therapy programme and teaches in the Academic Development – Access Department at the University of Johannesburg. Amalia is currently completing her Psychology credits to enable her training as an Art Therapist.
Dr. Nataly Woollett is an interdisciplinary social scientist and therapist with training in psychology, art therapy, play therapy and public health. Her clinical practice has focused on trauma, bereavement, gender based violence and the associated mental health issues of HIV. Dr. Woollett’s research is strongly informed by her therapeutic practice, with a consequent emphasis on mental health and intervention research. Trained in art therapy in the USA, she is co-creator of the first postgraduate degree in Art Therapy in South Africa, hosted by the University of Johannesburg, and teaches on this programme. Nataly is committed to ensuring ethical and contextual relevance of art therapy practice as well as increasing scale and access to the potential of creative interventions in mitigating mental health burdens of low and middle income countries.

Sara-Jane Asman is an Art Psychotherapist and is currently reading for her Ph.D. on the topic of Art Therapy and Neuroscience at Brunel University in London. Sara’s work focuses on both clinical and research elements reflecting her strengths of creativity and analysis. Sara believes that this way of working gives her an all-rounded experience as theory and academic work provide the necessary framework for working clinically with clients and patients. She also loves the variety in her work in which there is never a dull moment. Her work takes her to London, her “new” home but also allows her to spend time and help pioneer art therapy as a psychological modality in her country of birth, South Africa. Sara also engages regularly in art making and especially loves experimenting with new materials and developing new art therapy directives for her practice. Sara holds an MA in Art Psychotherapy and Mental Health Counselling from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and an undergrad and post-grad in Psychology from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Juliet L. King, PhD (ABD), ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC (moderator) is an Associate Professor in the Art Therapy Department at GWU and also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Neurology, at Indiana University School of Medicine.
