Description

This presentation will describe how trauma-informed screening improves identification of survivors of violence in a healthcare setting. Following will be an interactive presentation utilizing art therapy within a hospital setting. 

 

Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Participants will explain the importance of screening for victims of sexual, domestic, and intimate partner violence in medical settings by identifying at least one appropriate screening tool and implementation process.

  • Participants will describe 3 skill specific sets that can be used to explain trauma-informed responses when working with survivors in the immediate aftermath of violence and those who may remain in abusive relationships.

  • Participants will be able to identify 3 specific skills sets to explain trauma-informed responses when working with survivors who have a history of violence  and its impact on their life and relationships. 

 

Speakers

 

Carol Olson, MA, LPC, ATR, CSAC 

Carol

 

Carol is the Assistant Director of DV-IPV-SV-HT Initiatives and the Counseling Program. She is a licensed professional counselor and holds two master's degrees in counseling and art therapy. She has been working in mental health, trauma, and crisis response for over a decade within community mental health centers, rape crisis, domestic violence centers, and hospitals. She has focused on victims of violence, the impact of trauma, co-occurring mental health, and addiction in women. She has worked in leadership from local centers, regional and statewide agencies to national and international organizations developing intervention and prevention programs. Within VCU Injury and Violence Prevention Program, she manages both Project Empower and IVPP Counseling. She also creates radio programs on anti-violence education, mental health and trauma recovery, and women in leadership. 

 

Cassandra Michelle, LPC 

Cassandra

Cassandra is the lead therapist for IVPP Counseling Program and is a licensed professional counselor. She has her Master of Arts in Art Therapy and is a candidate to become a registered art therapist committed to offering individuals a safe and supportive environment to heal and thrive. She has over 5 years of experience working with survivors of violence and abuse. In her counseling sessions, clients will explore and develop important skills through meaning-making and creativity as well as evidenced-based approaches to processing trauma such as EMDR and DBT.

 

Juliet King, (ABD), ATR-BC, LPC, LMHC (presenter) is an Associate Professor in the Art Therapy Department at GWU and also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor of neurology, Indiana University School of Medicine
